There are two characters in the film, Esmeralda (Denise Becker) and Quasimodo (Henry Vorins). The film is the oldest film adaptation of novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

"Introduire le monstre" a l'écran...Alice Guy
Au tournant du siècle, c’est toujours le cinéma français qui investi dans le milieu de l’horreur, à travers la réalisatrice Alice Guy-Blaché. Guy-Blaché adapte l’œuvre de Victor Hugo, Notre-Dame de Paris (1831). Son film, La Esméralda (1905), inspira une multitude de versions américaines, dont The Hunchback de Van Dyke Brooke (1909) mais aussi européennes, voire Notre-Dame de Paris d’Albert Capellani (1911). L’importance du film d’Alice Guy-Blaché est sans conteste car il est le premier à introduire le monstre à l’écran. A noter aussi ses films américains Pit and the Pendulum premiere adaptation a l'écran d'Edgar Allan Poe en 1913, ou Vampire en 1920, qui reste parmi les meilleurs de l’époque.
